Janet Klunk

Janet Cecelia Roth Klunk, 83, went to her eternal home on June 29, 2024 at Jersey Community Hospital after a period of declining health.

Janet was born in Michael, Illinois on May 9, 1941, the daughter of Joseph and Sadie (Hazelwonder) Roth. 

She graduated from Jersey Community High School in 1959.  After high school, she worked in the accounting department and as a secretary at SIU – Alton campus.  In later years, she worked at Wal-Mart in the jewelry department.

She married Robert Klunk on June 4, 1960 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville and they enjoyed 48 years together until Robert’s death on August 8, 2008. 

She is survived by three daughters, Robin (Lester) Bierman, Kimberly (David) Smith and Lori (Joe) Travers, all of Jerseyville, eight grandchildren and their spouses, Marci (Michael Struberg) Hall, Matthew Bierman, Krista (Chad) Aljets, Kurtis Smith, Katelyn (Todd) Sinclair, Brett (Julie) Travers, Kylie Lahey, Chase (Jade) Travers, sixteen great grandchildren Sadye (Wade) Miller, Chloe Hall, Emily and Samantha Struberg, Madison Bierman, Lydia and Daxton Aljets, Miles Sinclair, Wyatt and Nora Lahey, Collin, Andrew, and Will Travers, Vince, Lucas, and Hattie Jo Travers and two great-great grandchildren, Bowen & Henry Miller.  One brother, Joseph Roth of San Diego, and one sister, Melba Friedel of Bethalto, and three special sisters-in-law, Karen Klunk of Jerseyville, Janet Lake of Carrollton, and  Betty Schnettgoecke of Carrollton.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sadie Roth,  two sisters, Mildred Kirbach of Godfrey and Anna Retzer of Jerseyville, three brothers, Alfred (Lily) Roth of San Diego, Loren “Ray”  (Elfrieda) Roth of Orlando, David Roth of Jerseyville, one sister-in-law, Paula Roth of San Diego, four brothers-in-law, Ed Kirbach of Godfrey, Paul Friedel of Bethalto, Joe Retzer of Jerseyville, and Edwin Klunk of Jerseyville, and her beloved dog, Jack.

Janet was a member of Holy Ghost Church in Jerseyville since 1960 and volunteered at St. Francis/Holy Ghost School for many years.  She dearly loved her family. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the highlight of her days.  She was known as “Grandma Janet” to many people beyond her family.  She enjoyed making birthday cakes for family and friends and they surely enjoyed receiving them.  She will be missed beyond words by many people.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville followed by a burial in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Memorials may be given to St. Francis/Holy Ghost School in Jerseyville.
