Charles D. Pfoutz, 86, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1929 in Richmond, Ind., he was the son of George Franklin and Etoil Elizabeth (Grow) Pfoutz.
The U.S. Army veteran served in the 101st Airborn Division during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at various tool & die shops until 1962 when he joined Monsanto Co. in St. Louis. He was transferred to New Jersey to help build a manufacturing facility, and later became its Plant Engineer. He later worked as Building Services Director for St. Louis University and then Plant Manager for Grunden-Marten, a manufacturing company. In 1978 he took a job with National Industries for the Blind, placing government contracts within the Sheltered Workshop Agencies. He was Manager of Production Services, setting up facilities within these agencies. He retired in 1993, then went to work for the Lighthouse for the Blind in St. Louis County as plant engineer, production manager and purchasing manager.
Survivors include his wife, Donna L. (Federle) Pfoutz, whom he married Oct. 25, 1986. Also surviving are his children and their spouses, Patricia Hill-Taylor and Greg of Dallas, Tex., Robert Pfoutz of St. Louis, Mo., Charlyne and Wes Jackson of Blue Springs, Mo., David and Beth Pfoutz of St. Louis, Christopher and Leslee Brooks of Marion, Ill., and Kimberly and Terry Best of Worden, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and a great grandchild; a brother, William Pfoutz of Indiana; nieces and nephews and many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Marlo and Mabel Pfoutz.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 17. Pastor Fred Church will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, with full military honors.
Memorials may be made to St. Louis Lighthouse for the Blind or the American Heart/Lung Association.
