Richard Gerlach

Granite City 06/24/2024

Richard Steven Gerlach, 70, a lifelong resident of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Gateway Regional Medical Center. He was born October 28, 1953, to the late Cleve Dale and Edna Maxine (Kuehnel) Gerlach.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn Jean (Reeves) Gerlach on May 18, 1974, in Granite City, recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

A proud veteran, Richard served with honor in the United States Navy. His dedication to service extended beyond his naval career as he was an active Life member of Madison AMVETS Post 204, contributing to the lives of fellow veterans. Richard’s love for the great outdoors was evident in his passion for camping and fishing. He found solace in nature’s embrace, often surrounded by family and the tranquil sounds of a flowing river.  An avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Richard’s enthusiasm for baseball was infectious. Above all, Richard was a man of generosity and kindness, always ready to engage in meaningful conversation and share a laugh. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he treasured every moment with them. His legacy of patriotism, compassion, and camaraderie will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Richard’s departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleve D. and Edna M. (Kuehnel) Gerlach and his three siblings, Rhona Jean Vaughn, Patricia Dale Moreland, and Julia Lynn DuPree.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Carolyn J. (Reeves) Gerlach, of Granite City, Illinois; his daughters, Tammy Lynn (Courtney) Hagenaars, of Manchester, Maine and Pamela Kay Gerlach, of Granite City, Illinois; his grandchildren, Emma Lynn Hagenaars, Abigail Marie Hagenaars, and Tyler Steven (Baylee Fortman) Gerlach; one great grandchild on the way; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
